Company Profile:

EZDERM, LLC

EZDERM, LLC® is an international technology company that consists of physicians, software engineers, mathematicians, web developers, graphic designers, 3D designers and 3D animators with a zeal to create world-class solutions for the field of medicine. The company’s main focus is to improve the quality of patient healthcare through empowerment of the physicians and patients with state-of-the-art technology. EZDERM principals invented a world class mobile solution, powered by Apple Corporation’s iPad®, which enables physicians and their staff to intuitively document patient encounters via touch based technology, anatomically accurate three-dimensional body maps, speech recognition and hand-written shorthand recognition. Integrated clinical decision support empowers the physicians to quickly and conveniently access all of the necessary information about differential diagnoses, workup algorithms, suggested treatment modalities that are available instantly at physicians’ fingertips. Among many other features, this technology allows physicians to converse with their colleagues, staff, and patients using iPad®-based telephony, video-conferencing, and text messaging. All of this is accomplished without the need for multiple devices, complicated hardware, or cumbersome desk-top computers and has resulted in filing for patent protection on many of the inventions. One powerful solution on one device: integration, yet simplification.

Q: Please tell us how your business idea was conceived. Was there an "aha" moment or did it evolve gradually?

A: Electronic health records have been used for almost half a century, but dissatisfaction rates are still extremely high. Recognizing that the EHR should complement, not interfere with, patients' visits to doctors was a necessary first step toward creating EZDERM software. In addition, we saw that because all medical conditions, including psychiatric, can be linked to a specific anatomical location, there is a need for a 3D anatomical model as the primary interface for data input.

Q: What's the most inventive, innovative, or disruptive aspect of your initiative?

A: The combination of an intuitive interface on a mobile platform, three-dimensional anatomical models, and an underlying SNOMED-CT knowledgebase with over 330,000 clinical concepts creates a powerful technology that no other EHR software has yet mustered. A patient portal (www.sadio.com) enables an ecosystem for collaboration among physicians, medical staff, and patients. And easy-to-use EZDERM software lets medical staff intuitively and accurately record patient-physician encounters in correct medical terms, leaving physician free from documentation burdens to focus on patients' concerns.

Q: How will it help people live to their greatest potential or contribute to making the world healthier?

A: Well-organized patient health records are crucial for effective healthcare. Incorporating an intuitive patient portal into the EZDERM system strives to bring all of a patient's health records together in one place, in an intuitive and medically appropriate way. Coordinating health data among members of a family in a structured way using SNOMED-CT standards lays a crucial platform for making the world healthier. It's why we named our patient portal SADIO; it's Portuguese for "healthy."

Q: Five years from now, what would you like to be able to say has been your most important contribution to health?

A: Arthur C. Clark said, "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." Our team strives to develop an EHR technology so advanced that patients are unaware of its use during their medical appointments because physicians' attention will be 100 percent on them. That magical part of healthcare was taken away from patients and physicians 41 year ago with first use of EHRs.

Q: What single word or phrase best describes the culture of your startup and why?

A: Sadio. The name of our patient portal is Portuguese for healthy, and our logo, a butterfly, represents the importance of a moment. While butterflies have life spans of only a few days, a human's lifespan is also limited. Immense advances in technology have improved our lives in almost all aspects of living. With health being the essence of an enjoyable stay on this planet, our team is determined to provide technology that contributes to healthier and more enjoyable living.
