About Mark Zhang

Mark Zhang D.O. is the co-founder of Cake, a Palliative Care consultant at Dana Farber Cancer Institute and a Clinical Informatics Fellow at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He completed medical school at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and an Internal Medicine residency and chief year at Allegheny General Hospital. He is a graduate of the Harvard Interprofessional Palliative Care Fellowship. Throughout his career, Mark has held an interest in leveraging technology to improve clinical medicine. Prior to Cake, he also co-created Palliative Care Fast Facts for iOS and Android. This application is one of the most widely used mobile reference applications in palliative care in the world.

About This Idea

Cake offers the easiest way to do advance care and end-of-life planning. Their mobile-friendly platform guides you through the planning process and makes it easy to share your plans with loved ones. Everyone will eventually die, yet only 1 in 4 people plan for itCake helps you by breaking up end-of-life planning into simple, bite-size chunks called “Cake Cards.” By empowering users to make meaningful progress in a short amount of time, they have lowered the barrier to engaging with this topic. Cake also facilitates communication about end-of-life wishes, something many of us want to do but find difficult, awkward, and even emotional. They are more than just a destination for end-of-life planning—they are a place for honoring your life, and the lives of the ones you love.
