Kohler, Johann David: Composite Atlas 1718

In the era when controlling the seas meant controlling the world, this 1718 volume is an illustrated school atlas that included cutaway illustrations of large ships of the time. In addition to celestial charts and town plans of great cities from Rome to Nuremberg, the atlas also contains a 1715 map showing France’s claims on the territory of Louisiana as covering most of today’s continental U.S..
