2015 Individual World Poetry Slam Champion Emtithal “Emi” Mahmoud was born in Sudan and came to the United States in 1998, escaping the Darfur genocide with her family. Emi graduated from Yale University in May 2016, with degrees in Anthropology and Molecular Biology and a certificate in Global Health. Emi’s goal is to alleviate structural disparities on maternal and child health in disadvantaged communities across the world. Emi is a Yale Global Health Fellow, is involved in the Yale Refugee Project, contributes to an international research initiative, and teaches spoken word poetry to empower youth of various communities. As part of the Darfur Alert Coalition, Emi has also presented poetry nationwide to raise awareness and aid for genocide victims in her homeland.
